Why Wellness Exams are Important
Prevention is a wellness care staple. When examining your pet, we can:
Verify your pet’s health and set a baseline, or detect early warning signs of a potential health problem
Suggest diagnostics and possible treatment options for any existing issues we find
Compile a detailed, ongoing health history that makes it easier for us to detect unusual changes or concerns in a timely manner in the future
Ask you about your pet’s appetite, diet, exercise routine, and other daily habits
Answer any and all questions related to your pet’s health
Furthermore, we can also begin or update your pet’s vaccination schedule and perform heartworm testing at this time. Yearly parasite screening is very important, especially if your pet missed a dose (or more) of their parasite preventative.
Staying Well at Every Stage of Life
Pets need consistent, thorough wellness care at every age.
For puppies and kittens, we recommend that they see their vet as early as 6-8 weeks old for a full health evaluation. We also require a fecal sample under 24 hours old for intestinal parasite screening, along with any existing paperwork and prior medical records. Puppy/kitten visits usually take longer, as we have a lot of ground to cover when discussing their needs.
Adult dogs and cats benefit from yearly maintenance, which generally involves a physical, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and a refill of parasite preventatives. Remember, it is also important for you to bring up any changes you may have seen since your pet’s last exam that we can address during their visit.
Senior pets can fall ill or become injured more easily than younger pets. Therefore, we recommend semiannual checkups and tests to make sure they’re in the best possible shape. Chronic pain, lameness, incontinence, and dental disease are common among seniors and should be monitored closely.
